Purpose of the Job
- Responsible for the editorial strategy, acquisition, and management of a portfolio of traditional Major Reference Works (multi-volume Works such as encyclopaedias, comprehensives and treatises).
Main Activities and Responsibilities
Product Acquisition and Management
Develop and acquire commercially attractive, new e-leading reference content products, including creating proposals and financials for approval and then commission high-quality and committed editors-in-chief for each product.
Accountable for signings and delivery of product.
Collaborate with editors-in-chief of Major Reference Works in development to create editorial boards of well-known academics who will be highly motivated to deliver content on time.
Manage a portfolio of published Major Reference Works (print and online) to identify, develop and publish revision, adaptation and derivative products targeted to market needs.
Manage new online reference modules including commissioning content for publication in product.
Meet annual signing goal.
Product Delivery and Revenue Management
Work closely with Project Managers in Operations Group to ensure delivery on time and within budget of Major Reference Works/online reference modules in development.
Negotiate contracts with editors, authors partners and other parties to ensure best possible net revenue outcome for Elsevier, reviewing terms and progress with content providers during development process as required to ensure on-time delivery of agreed material, and in support of Project Managers.
Collaborate with internal colleagues in other publishing groups, and with sales and marketing to ensure publication, sales revenue, profit and other goals are met.
Author Relationship Management
Maintain strong relationships with editors and authors, including calling meetings as needed and ensuring author queries and concerns are appropriately handled.
Similarly, maintain strong collaborative relationship with outsourcers and other freelancer suppliers.
Adjust communication style and methods of interacting with editors/authors as appropriate to ensure a positive outcome in terms of product quality, timeliness of publication, and revenue/profit potential.
Remain fully informed of publishing developments within Elsevier (books, journals, etc.) and externally that would be of interest to authors, and actively communicate these initiatives as appropriate to become their expert publishing contact and an essential source of intelligence on "what's happening in publishing."
- Develop and implement an editorial strategic plan for portfolio to meet market needs, including recommendations for product positioning and strategic partnerships (both internal and external)
Customer and Market Focus
Acquire customer knowledge, subject knowledge and competitor knowledge, and build a network of appropriate and high-quality contacts, such as potential editors-in-chef, editorial board members, and other key influences and leaders, for subject areas within portfolio.
Includes conducting customer reviews and surveys, and attending conferences and other external meetings as appropriate.
Track market developments, including funding trends, competitor activities, new growth areas and areas for shrinking in importance.
As requested, pursue publishing partnership opportunities on behalf of Editorial Team (or S&T Books overall).
Research partnership potential advantages/risks, propose terms for partnership to Publishing Director or other stakeholders, and negotiate terms with potential partners.
Monitor progress of partnership in its infancy, handing the relationship to the appropriate parties for long-term management when appropriate.
Editorial Team member - Attend Editorial Team strategy meetings and give relevant constructive feedback or advice regarding proposals for other AEs.
Pass along relevant author/advisor contacts and proposals to colleagues in appropriate areas as warranted.
Sales & Marketing Interaction - Work with Marketing & Sales to promote products and in the development of marketing strategy, marketing plans and the initial drafting of promotional messages (including participation at conferences, trade shows and sales meetings as appropriate).
Operations - Partner with Operations staff and management with an eye to positive outcome for final products, in terms of quality/timeliness/cost control of product and satisfactory publishing experience for contributors.
Other - Work collaboratively and professionally with colleagues in S&T Journals Editorial and Marketing, Royalties, Contracts, Finance, Publishing Support etc.
Systems & Processes
- Ensure that all data in books tracking systems and databases are accurate and up-to-date and that all processes underlying the editorial and publication process are adhered to.

BA/BS required; background in Science preferred.
Demonstrable experience in scientific publishing with books and/or journals.
Experience managing large, complex publishing projects.
Experience commissioning and managing external academic Editorial Boards in scientific publishing.
Experience commissioning and publishing Major Reference Works highly preferred.
