Under general oversight, this position will have responsibility to provide subject matter expertise health system operations, support to community-level committees or task forces, management of due diligence or transaction documentation, and some oversight of Staff Attorneys. Functional areas include a broad range of health law areas affecting Mercy’s services and operations with focus on clinical trial research agreements, hospital operational support; health care risk management; clinical-related issues; regulatory compliance; medical staff and accreditation; clinical affiliation agreements; and health care reform and reimbursement. Under supervision, development of subject matter expertise on one or more complex functions is expected. This position will be expected to carry out legal project, transaction or task force implementations as directed.
The clients of an Assistant Counsel will be a combination of more senior attorneys and a limited number of business or operations personnel for which subject matter expertise is being provided. The Assistant Counsel generally provides legal analysis and recommendations for strategies and approaches to more senior counsel within the legal department. The Assistant Counsel performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with Mercy’s mission, values and service standards.
Drafts and/or reviews legal documents and contracts relating to a variety of clinical and business-related situations and clinical trial research agreements.
Provides legal counsel on regulatory issues and development of possible alternative to achieve desired strategic and business objectives.
Anticipate and guards against legal risk. Stays abreast of current developments in legal and regulatory developments and determines impact on Mercy entities and services.
Some supervision and management of junior attorneys and law clerks. Works collaboratively with in-house legal counsel for other Mercy communities, in-house counsel with ministry-wide responsibilities and the Compliance Department.
Participate in committees and task groups and other duties as assigned.

Doctorate of Jurisprudence
Membership in the Missouri Bar or eligibility for immediate admission
Three to five (5) or more years experience as a practicing attorney with at least three (3) years of health care experience and specialized experience in one of more of the following areas: antitrust, tax, employment law, physician practice acquisitions; hospital operational support; health care risk management; clinical-related issues; regulatory compliance; medical staff and accreditation; clinical affiliation agreements; managed care contracting; real estate and construction; and health care reform and reimbursement.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
