          Description

          SUMMARY: The Registered Nurse executes comprehensive nursing care activities and provides psychiatric nursing staff leadership. He/she assesses patient needs, plans and implements patient care activities and evaluates the patient's response to treatment. He/she manages/acts within the therapeutic milieu and directs the delivery of nursing care by other members of the nursing treatment team. He/she will supervise licensed practical/vocational nurses and mental health technicians.

          SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

          LPNs, Mental Health Technicians / Certified Nurses Aides and other registered nurses when performing the tasks of charge nurse.

          ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


          • Assess the patient on admission and formulates a plan of care derived from a comprehensive physical‑psychosocial assessment.

          • Serves as the primary nursing care coordinator for assigned patients.

          • Develops comprehensive nursing care plans which take the patient's total needs into account, utilizes assessment data and integrates the medical care plan.

          • Plans, implements and coordinates nursing care activities for assigned patients.

          • Performs treatment interventions requiring a physician's order and registered nurses licensure for administration, (i.e., medication administration, medical treatments).

          • Interprets the nursing and treatment needs of the patient to non‑professional staff members assigned to the patient.

          • Accepts and transcribes verbal and written physician orders and incorporates them into the treatment plan.

          • Participates in individual, group and family psychotherapy and educational seminars, as appropriate.

          • Provides comprehensive patient and family health education.

          • Monitors and enforces utilization of proper nursing techniques and procedures.

          • Provides for patient safety, privacy and confidentiality.

          • Enacts the counseling role of the nurse.

          • Documents continuous geropsychiatric assessment, intervention and evaluations relative to patient progress.

          • Attends interdisciplinary team meetings and assumes responsibility for communication of treatment goals to pertinent staff members

          • Participates in conversion of telephone assessment into assessment appointments or admissions.

          • Acts as liaison between patients, families and other health care providers.

          • Assesses the clinical performance of nursing staff under his/her direction in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Manager.

          • Provides continuous education to unit paraprofessional staff.

          • Orients new employees.

          • Implements hospital policies and procedures.

          • Coordinates function of the therapeutic milieu.

          • Models for other staff effective communication with families, agencies and hospital.

          • Provides consultative services to nursing staff on other units relative to mental health issues.

          • Actively functions as a contributing member of the treatment team.

          • Models for other staff appropriate telephone etiquette and intervention techniques.

          QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

          Education and/or Experience:

          · Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.

          · Graduate of an accredited program preparing the practitioner for licensure as aregistered nurse.

          · Licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in the state.

          · A minimum of one year’s experience in psychiatric nursing preferred.

          License(s), Certification(s), Registration(s), Accreditation(s):

          · Registered Nursing license in the state ofMissouri

          · BLS Certificate

          Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

          · Has satisfactorily completed the competency requirements for the hospital and for the unit including State requirements as a clinically privileged nurse competent in voluntary and involuntary behavioral intervention.

          · Knowledge, technique and communication skills for the care and treatment of mental illness in geriatric patients.

          · Ability to communicate effectively.

          · Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

          · Ability to write reports.

          · Ability to learn and adapt.

          · Ability to direct others.

          · Knowledge of Word Processing software and other specialized software for healthcare industry.

          · Skilled in operation of tools, equipment, and materials listed below.
